Navigating the Holiday Season with Lupus: 7 Tips for Stress Management
People regularly reach out to us wanting to share their stories. We think it’s important to highlight others’ experiences living with lupus and connect the community through hope, inspiration and determination to live a life that is not defined by lupus. Sharing your journey helps others know that they’re not alone.
This month, we asked people on Facebook, Instagram, Threads and Twitter to share their experiences with how they manage stress over the holidays. Amidst the holiday breaks, it's crucial to prioritize self-care and stress management. Take a look at some advice from the unique journeys of people with lupus as they share their strategies for navigating stress.
Take it One Day at a Time
For many dealing with lupus, approaching each day with a mindful perspective is key. "Take one day at a time," Jerlonda J. tells us. Athoneyo W. also explains that he “takes it one hour at a time to stay focused on the one task” that he’s doing. Jerlonda, Anthoneyo and others emphasize the importance of focusing on the present moment, taking time to breathe and appreciating the small victories.
Use Dance and Music Therapy
Maria A. shares that she takes “time to breathe in and out by listening to music and dancing.” Whether it's a solo dance party or a quiet moment with headphones on, the power of music and movement cannot be underestimated as a stress reliever.
Be Comfortable With Declining Invitations
"Just say no!" – an empowering mantra for those living with lupus, shared by Bekah C. She recognizes the value of setting boundaries and understanding that it's perfectly okay not to accept every invitation. And if you need to decide that staying home is best for you at times, like Jas, that’s important to establish. Prioritizing self-care over societal expectations becomes a crucial aspect of stress management.
Remember The Power of Nature and Walking
Staying active is a common thread in lupus management. "Walking is my go-to stress reliever," Nadine K. writes. Her advice is shared by many on our social platforms. Whether in the embrace of nature or the bustling city streets, a simple walk can make a significant difference in managing stress levels.
Relax With Journaling, Yoga, and Creative Hobbies
Engaging in creative pursuits – such as journaling, crocheting and yoga – offers a therapeutic outlet for stress, as Michelle B. shares with us. These activities not only provide a sense of accomplishment but also contribute to your overall well-being.
Embrace 'Me Time'
Several individuals stress the importance of making time for yourself. Whether you’re spending time with your pets like Heather or practicing meditation like Janine C., carving out moments dedicated to your personal well-being is crucial to managing stress.
Schedule Rest Days
The main response we received for this blog was about getting enough rest. Joy S. states that she has “strict boundaries for friends and family and designated rest days.” Establishing clear boundaries and designating specific days for rest are essential strategies for managing stress. By limiting social events and ensuring adequate rest between activities, people with lupus can better navigate the holiday hustle without compromising their health.
Let's draw inspiration from these lupus warriors who gracefully manage stress and prioritize self-care. By adopting these diverse strategies, individuals with lupus can create a holiday experience that aligns with their health needs – fostering a sense of well-being and joy amidst the festivities. Remember, it's not about doing it all; it's about doing what brings you peace and happiness.
