Maria Dall’Era is the Jean S. Engleman Distinguished Professor and Chief of the Division of Rheumatology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She is the Director of the UCSF Lupus Program and the Rheumatology Clinical Research Center. She serves as the Chair of the Lupus Clinical Investigators Network (LuCIN). Dr. Dall'Era earned her medical degree at UCSF, where she also completed her internal medicine residency, serving as Chief Resident, and as a fellowship in rheumatology.
She is truly a doctor’s doctor, providing lupus care to patients throughout Northern California and spending hours each week helping clinicians both nationally and internationally address challenging clinical cases. She is one of the most sought-after lecturers on the topic of lupus, speaking at multiple events for the American College of Rheumatology and other organizations each year.
Dr. Dall’Era has made outstanding contributions to lupus research over several decades. As PI of the CDC-funded California Lupus Epidemiology Study, she has adeptly led one of the largest studies examining the natural history and outcomes of lupus and established a biorepository and translational omics database that is under high demand for samples and high-quality clinical data. She is an accomplished lupus clinical trialist, leading important investigator-initiated studies in lupus and lupus nephritis. She also serves on the Steering Committee of the 21st Century Lupus Conference and the ACR-sponsored annual Winter Rheumatology Symposium. She received the Edmund L. Dubois Memorial Lectureship Award from the American College of Rheumatology and the Ephraim Engleman Award for Excellence in Arthritis Research.
