Belimumab is Safe and Effective in Older Adults with Lupus
In older adults (ages 65+) with lupus, belimumab (Benlysta®) is a safe and effective treatment option, and is beneficial in overall populations with the disease. Belimumab was the first FDA-approved medication specifically designed for the treatment of lupus.
The records of 219 adults ages 65+ with lupus were compared to clinical trial data collected from more than 8,100 people with the disease. Researchers looked at safety outcomes of belimumab use, including adverse events, serious adverse events and adverse events of special interest, and no concerns were identified between older adults and overall populations taking the medication.
Belimumab is one of the most studied lupus treatments for safety. These findings add to the growing body of evidence demonstrating its safety. Learn more about Benlysta.
