Congress Passes Fiscal Year 2025 Funding for Lupus Programs
Earlier tonight, Congress passed the Full-Year Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act funding the government for the remainder of Fiscal Year 2025—through September 30, 2025-- at current funding levels, with a few exceptions.
The legislation includes:
- $10 million for the National Lupus Patient Registry at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
- $2 million for the National Lupus Training, Outreach, and Clinical Trial Education Program at the Office of Minority Health (OMH)
- $47.08 billion for the National Institutes of Health, the largest funder of lupus research
However, the bill also includes a 57% cut in funding for the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP), which include the Lupus Research Program (LRP) as well as more than 40 other disease research programs at the Department of Defense (DoD).
While the legislation reduces funding for the CDMRPs as a whole, it does not specifically cut funding for the LRP or any of the other DoD medical research programs. Therefore, it remains unclear what the impact will be on the LRP.
The Lupus Foundation of America is coordinating with our champions in the Congressional Lupus Caucus to protect and strengthen lupus programs across the government and it is more important than ever that our voices are heard in Washington.
There will be a strong call for action from lupus warriors, and you can ensure you receive alerts to get involved by signing up as a lupus advocate. Your voice matters and today it matters more than ever!
With that in mind, we encourage people with lupus across the country to join together in Washington DC for the 2025 National Advocacy Summit May 4-6. Registration and details are available here. This empowering event has helped generate millions in funding for lupus research and advanced policies that improve access to care; and it will continue to do so with participation from lupus advocates like you.
Together we will continue to make a difference!
