Study Finds Krill Oil Concentrate Could Replenish Omega-3 Levels and Decrease Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity
In a new study, krill oil concentrate (KOC) was found to safely reverse omega-3 deficiency in people with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and decrease disease activity. A diet containing omega-3 fatty acids may contribute to the prevention of SLE disease activity, as they decrease inflammation by inhibiting the production of inflammatory mediators derived from omega-6 fatty acids.
Researchers studied 78 adults with active SLE. They were randomly given 4 g/day of KOC or placebo for 24 weeks. After four weeks of treatment, the baseline omega-3 levels of the group taking KOC increased, and levels further increased after 24 weeks. The increases persisted through 48 weeks of treatment. Disease activity also decreased significantly in those taking KOC. Overall, KOC was well tolerated with no safety concerns. The study also found that cell membranes of people with SLE had lower levels of omega-3, and 38% of the group had omega-3 levels that elevated their risk of cardiovascular disease. A second treatment with KOC improved the group’s risk levels within one month of consumption.
This study suggests KOC may be beneficial for SLE management and further research is needed to evaluate benefits. Consult your physician before making any changes to your diet. Learn more about eating healthy when you have lupus.
