Kristen Buckley's Lupus Journey
Join Kristen Buckley as she navigates life as a devoted mother of 8, a dedicated student, and a warrior facing multiple diagnoses, including lupus. Gain insights into managing chronic illness, finding support, and embracing hope amidst adversity.
My name is Kristen Buckley. I am a 36-year-old mom of eight (five boys, two girls, and one angel baby), a daughter, a friend, an aunt, a sister, a niece, and a cousin. I am a full-time online college student in my junior year, pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a concentration in Christian Counseling.
I live with multiple diagnoses such as depression, anxiety, migraines, and hypermobility. I was recently diagnosed in 2023 with MCTD (Mixed Connective Tissue Disorder) and Lupus. Currently, I am waiting to talk with my neurologist about the small central extrusion with approximately 3 mm (about 0.12 in) inferior disc migration, annular fissure, and mild canal stenosis at my C6-7 spinal discs.
Initially, it was thought that my pains were individualized, but then I started to have symptoms resembling Multiple Sclerosis, which we recognized because my mom has MS and I was having similar symptoms. I underwent multiple blood tests and was referred to Rheumatology and Neurology. After x-rays, blood work, and MRIs I was officially diagnosed.
My family and friends are an amazing support system not only for me but also for each other, as this does not just affect me, it affects them as well.
Because of my mom’s diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis, I was somewhat familiar with autoimmune disorders, but I am still learning about my autoimmune diagnosis of Lupus and the changes that need to be made in my life. Being newly diagnosed has been a little overwhelming, but I am happy to have found the Lupus Foundation of America.
I look forward to learning more and being a part of such a great organization.
