Dana T. - Diagnosed at age 35
At just 16 years old, I embarked on a tumultuous journey when my primary care doctor suggested that I might have lupus. For years, various specialists dismissed my concerns, which left me feeling frustrated and invisible. This constant invalidation fueled my determination to uncover the truth about my health struggles. It wasn't until I turned 35 that I finally received an official diagnosis: lupus.
My diagnosis opened my eyes to the harsh reality of living with lupus in West Virginia. I was shocked by the lack of resources and support groups and the limited awareness among healthcare professionals spurred me into action. Connecting with the Lupus Foundation of America (LFA) became pivotal for me. No longer was I alone; I found a community that understood my struggles. This transition transformed my frustration into a passionate mission: to ensure that no one had to feel as lost and hopeless as I did.
Living with lupus has taught me the importance of being intentional with my energy and learning to cherish each moment as a precious gift. I realized that my journey was not just about managing a chronic illness; it was about discovering a deeper purpose in life. I am committed to using my voice to raise awareness about lupus, shedding light on this misunderstood condition.
Each day brings unique challenges—a continuous journey of adaptation. Some days, I feel invincible, ready to take on the world; other days, simply getting out of bed can feel overwhelming. Throughout these highs and lows, I have grown to value self-care, acceptance, and the support of my loved ones. The kindness and encouragement I receive from sharing my journey fills me with hope.
My experience with lupus profoundly impacts not only me but also my family. With my husband’s unwavering support and the love of our three exceptional children, I refuse to let lupus define who I am. In an extraordinary twist, I stepped back into the world of pageantry in 2024, and proudly won the national title of Mrs. USA Prime. This experience allowed me to shine a spotlight on lupus awareness. Additionally, I earned the prestigious honor of becoming a National Ambassador for the LFA and West Virginia’s first and only support group facilitator, committed to helping others navigate their journeys. Through my experiences, I hope to inspire others to face their challenges with courage and determination.
