Making a Difference to Honor His Mom
Ryan’s mother was diagnosed with lupus eight years before she ultimately lost her battle with the disease. “We knew she was in pain and not feeling well, but she would never complain,” shared Ryan.
Ryan’s mom Kathy struggled daily with lupus related symptoms and complications – from poor blood circulation to sun sensitivity and difficulties with recovering from colds. After seeing what his mother battled each day with lupus, Ryan knew he wanted to do something to make a difference and honor his mother’s memory.
Ryan has always played golf, so when thinking of how he would fundraise and raise awareness for lupus, a golf tournament just made sense. While his golfing community has always been supportive, Ryan shared, “My mom was a great person and there were a lot of people that loved her, so a lot of our friends and family get involved.”
In addition to a day of golfing, Ryan organizers sponsors for golf holes around the course and receives donated prizes to have an auction during the event. The day then culminates with a dinner celebrating his mother’s life and helping people to better understand lupus.
While a lot of work goes into the tournament, Ryan enjoys putting on the event to remember his mom. “If you’re looking to start a fundraiser for lupus, don’t ever get discouraged! The actual day makes all of the work worthwhile,” said Ryan.
Every year Ryan has raised more and more – with over $5,300 raised this year and countless friends, family members and other participants learning more about lupus and spreading awareness.
