The focus of this research is on understanding how the immune system responds to molecules which are part of the body (called self molecules or autoantigens) and how they contribute to the development of the two closely related diseases, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) Immunity to some proteins from our cells (autoantigens) appears to have a central role in these diseases. The overall goal of the project is to study a new mouse model that develops immunity to one specific autoantigen (called U1-70kD).
