Thirty-One Faces of Hope: Evin Percival

The lupus community includes people living with lupus, friends, family and supporters across Georgia. For Lupus Awareness Month, we would like to highlight some of our lupus heroes and champions.

Meet Evin Percival

Having faced the daunting reality of a serious illness, I've learned firsthand the profound impact it can have on individuals and their families.

It all began on January 21, 2023, when I developed a rash on the back of my forearm that appeared out of nowhere. It was itchy and irritating, but my doctors treated it accordingly, and I continued with life.

Our trip to the beach for my daughter's spring break on April 7, 2023, I was bit by a black ant. Initially, it seemed like a minor issue. After returning to Georgia in time for Easter service, which was uplifting, I woke up on April 10, 2023, the day after Easter, in utter disbelief. Overnight, I had gained a staggering 38 lbs, going from 174 lbs to 212 lbs. Alarmed by this sudden and drastic change, I immediately contacted my doctor to schedule an appointment.

Countless doctor visits and emergency room trips followed as medical professionals worked tirelessly to uncover the root cause of my illness. Little did I know, my kidneys were failing, silently deteriorating under the weight of the fluid overload. Despite my declining health, I continued to engage in my child's activities, unaware of the impending storm brewing within my body. Apart from the edema throughout my body, which made breathing difficult, and the persistent rash on my forearm, I had no other symptoms.

Fast forward to May 5th, after leaving my daughter’s field trip, I had a routine outpatient appointment, my doctor's concern grew as she noticed signs of dehydration and further decline in my health. I was promptly admitted to the hospital, where a series of surgeries, tests, scans were performed. I now weighed 225 lbs., now increasing my weight by 51 lbs. gained, making even the simplest tasks like walking a challenge and leaving me gasping for breath as fluid surrounded my heart. It was a nightmare I couldn't wake up from.

The labs performed revealed the devastating diagnosis: lupus nephritis. Shock and tears overwhelmed me as my doctors explained the severity of my condition. The creatinine level in my blood had skyrocketed to 4.6, while a normal level is 1 or lower, indicating that my kidneys were functioning at 22%. Dialysis or a kidney transplant appeared as potential necessities, leaving me speechless with worry, especially for my child's future.

Reflecting on the journey, I realized that the pressure I had placed on myself was unrealistic and had likely triggered the lupus flare. It was a harsh wake-up call, a reminder to address concerns promptly and remain prayerful.

Through it all, my family stood by my side, stepping in to care for my child when I couldn't. Their unwavering support was a beacon of light in my darkest hours.

My kidney doctors fought relentlessly, devising a treatment plan that included medications and therapies to reduce inflammation and restore my kidneys. Every day brought a glimmer of hope as my creatinine levels gradually declined, getting closer to normalcy.

Then, on Mother's Day, May 14, 2023, came the miracle I had prayed for. After being in the hospital for 2 weeks, My Rheumatologist delivered the best gift, a creatinine level of 1.1, signaling a remarkable recovery. I was discharged from the hospital, reunited with my child, and embraced by a newfound sense of gratitude and determination.

Since then, I've embarked on a journey to reclaim my health, attending numerous outpatient appointments to monitor my progress and adjust my treatment plan. With each passing day, my strength and appetite return, fueling my determination to overcome lupus and resume the life I once knew.

My story is a testament to the power of resilience, faith, and the unwavering support of loved ones. I share it in the hope that it may inspire others facing similar challenges to never lose hope and to always believe in the possibility of healing.
