Continuing Medical Education through the EMPOWER Program
The Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation’s EMPOWER program is a free educational program supported by the United States Department of Health & Human Services Office of Minority Health National Lupus Outreach and Clinical Trial Education Program (Lupus Program) to improve knowledge about lupus, lupus treatments, and lupus clinical trials (CPI-MP-17-002-1 2017).
Educating My Patients on Ways to Safely Engage in Research (EMPOWER) seeks to reduce lupus related health disparities among racial and ethnic minority populations that are disproportionately affected by lupus.
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of people with lupus and primary care providers and staff involved in the care of patients with autoimmune diseases, specifically lupus.
What Is Lupus and Why Are Clinical Trials Important for Lupus Patients?
- Misunderstanding of different cultures by the people running clinical trials
- Lack of information about clinical trials and patients’ rights when a person is deciding whether to participate
- Limited availability of medical information written in everyday language to help busy clinics provide materials in writing that patients can take home.

- Identify groups of people who are at higher risk for lupus.
- Make the connection between under-representation of some minority groups in clinical trials and how this affects the development of optimal treatments for them.
- Work together to empower patients in their decisions about whether to participate in clinical trials.
- Engage in “two-way” listening between the patient and clinician.
